Do you know what success looks like for you? I’m amazed by the number of people who are dissatisfied with their current situations but cannot describe what their personal happiness would look like.
In “Alice in Wonderland,” the Cheshire Cat tells Alice that if you don’t know where you want to go, then “it really doesn’t matter which way you go.” Another way of saying it is, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.”
So, if you’re not happy where you’re at, you first need to decide where you need to be to be happy. What does success look like for you? If it’s not your definition of success, you can be sure that someone else’s definition isn’t going to do it for you either.
I think this may be why so many lottery winners end up miserable.
There are four things you can do right now:
- Most importantly, spend some dream time to get a clear vision of the result that you want. Get to know your destination.
- If you are not happy with the results you currently are getting, stop doing the same thing over and over again while expecting a different result. (Expecting a different result from doing the same thing is the definition of insanity, you know).
- Prepare to be uncomfortable. Breaking old habits and developing new habits are hard.
- Ease the discomfort of change by reviewing the vision that you have for yourself daily, maybe even twice a day. It will remind you of why you’ve left the comfort of the habit for a new direction that will get you to your goals.
What does success look like for you? Until you can get that picture clear in your own mind, you won’t know which road will get you there. Dream big. Take risks. Get comfortable with discomfort.
